I hope that many people will find some answers here. I suffered from undiagnosed Blastocystic parasite infection for almost 5 years before I was diagnosed properly and I could not disagree more you’re your above heading! In those five and a half years my health literally plummeted and I was searching under every rock I could find to try and work out what was happening to my body. I caused chronic fatigue in my body and daily tasks because an uphill battle. I don't want to sound too dramatic but I simply want to say that I did eventually find a cure. Flaglyl did help enormously. I tried several homeopathic treatments first and none were strong enough. The other weekly routine that I did for the last six weeks of my treatment was do a Garlic cleanse once a week. The cleanse process was as follows. I would drink water and swallow 12-15 cloves of raw chopped up fresh (not preserved) garlic over the period about 4 hours. (About 1.5- 2 cloves every half an hour.) There is no need to chew the raw garlic, chop finely and swallow as you would swallow tablets. This would be done one a Friday or Saturday late afternoon. I would go to bed early and dress warmly. My body temperature would raise slightly (some people start shivering or sweating at some point during the night, but there is no danger so they should not be alarmed. It's simply the 'die-off' affect but keep warm since the raising of the body temperature is also part of the key.)The intense raw garlic consumption over the period of a few hours literally bombard the gut with antibacterial goodness and kills all forms of parasites and worms. Some people inspect their stool for the next few days to see what shows up but ofcourse Blasto parasites are far too small to see with the naked eye. I also did weekly coffee enimas for the last four weeks and a colonic two days after each Garlic cleanse. I found that the garlic cure (especially) combined with the Flagyl (especially) and some additional herbal medicines and routines literally transformed my life. Regaining health after such a terrible illness has been liberating and I am delighted to finally be symptom free and back to living a normal live again. I would like to send the message to anyone via your blog who has Blasto that it does take time to fix but a strict health regime such as I have explained above is absolutely a must and I would recommend to give yourself at least 6 months to recover. I would strongly encourage people to not just accept Blasto and leave it untreated. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to get the details of the clinic that I went to for the herbal treatments. (Based in Australia) Be patient in your recovery and get well. I hope that this information is helpful to others. crimson prophethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13855917325125959485noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-26634566285681536582014-03-17T00:27:03.236+01:002014-03-17T00:27:03.236+01:00Hi,

In response to the issues raised at the end of the article, I have two comments.
1- Our group reported in 2012 that Blastocystis ST-7 cysteine proteases induce disruption of epithelial tight junctions. See Mirza et al 2012
2- There is also a paper "in press" that compared the tight junction disruptive properties of ST4 and ST7 strains with varying cysteine proteases activity. It should be out this month.

Regards,
Haris MirzaAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00455619557098642042noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-80303268275284620132014-03-06T15:50:26.284+01:002014-03-06T15:50:26.284+01:00I was informed I had blastocystis hominis a month ...I was informed I had blastocystis hominis a month ago from a stool sample. I've tried a 5 day course of bactrim and also a 2mg dose o tinidazole to no avail. im still experiencing up to 7 watery stools per day. This had been going on for a month now. I also have crohns disease but had a colonoscopy and endoscopy a week ago and they said everything was fine in regards to my crohns. I have a feeling if I'm prescribed metronidazole it still won't be effective. If it's not blasto causing my diarrhoea, what could it possibly be? I've been suffering from a lot of digestive issues (severe bloating and flatulence, abdominal pain, re-occurring diarrhea and/or frequent loose stools (sometimes up to 6-7 times a day), etc.). I've also been suffering with at times extreme fatigue, body pain and mental fog and when it all started 3 continuous weeks of severe tremors!! I've had these symptoms for over two years and the Dr's couldn't do anything for me (after ordering lots of tests which all came back negative!!). So I finally did the stool test which found some bacterial overgrowth along with lots of parsites (Blastocytis). I'm now taking an herbal formula (Berberine, black walnut, wormwood, etc.) in addition to garlic pills and aregano oil. I've been taking these for almost three weeks now and I'm experiencing a lot of improvement in all my symptoms (no more bloating, brain fog, weakness, etc). I must say after one week of taking these medications I had a couple of days that felt worse than ever (so weak to even move or talk, extreme body pain, extreme bloating, etc) and then after those two days I've been better than I've ever been in two years! So, I was wondering if you know and/or have some references about treating parasites with these herbs and their efficacy and/or potential side effects, and if you know about the die-off reaction (which I think is what I experiences after a week of medication).

Thanks,
-MojdehMojihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01344833421940427916noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-2866636890772827392013-06-13T19:54:24.576+02:002013-06-13T19:54:24.576+02:00Hi Christen

After several years in business now, my experience is that - at least in Denmark - the lowest prevalence of Blastocystis is seen in patients with IBD and acute diarrhoea (0-10%), IBS patients have a somewhat higher prevalence, while healthy individuals approach a prevalence of 30% (PCR-based data). So, the healthier a person is, the more likely is it that this person is a Blastocystis carrier! Also, if you have been diagnosed with D. fragilis - you are more likely also to have Blastocystis compared to people without D. fragilis.

RuneRune Stensvoldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09505548093935198201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-80694064994072185682013-06-12T22:00:22.021+02:002013-06-12T22:00:22.021+02:00This is quite interesting. I haven't found any studies that use the chemically induced colitis mouse model in combination with B. hominus to determine if Blastocystis knocks down or exacerbates the auto-immune response in mice. It would be interesting to know if supplements of Blastocystis could be used to ameliorate symptoms (like Bacteroides uniformes usage to treat metabolic syndrome symptoms).

IBS seems to be associated with the opposite trend-high B. hominis. Do you have any guesses about why this might be the case?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15495815277244771632noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-37022135721801727672013-06-06T18:57:01.007+02:002013-06-06T18:57:01.007+02:00Hi there,

I did happen to find a center in Australia that works with Blastocyst quite frequently. Maybe you would want to speak with them. Their treatments seem promising.

About the salinity in the cenotes, from what I gather, it is rather high and the water is not stagnant, it apparently runs through a labyrinth of under ground caves and the cenotes are sink holes from the ground down to the cave systems.

Here is the center in Australia:
http://www.cdd.com.au/

My daughters still have not been tested. They are charging us $450 for the tests and my doctor seems to think they must have what I have because the symptoms are very similar. Both of my daughters are now having shortness of breath, as well. We have extreme fatigue and our quality of life is drastically reduced from what it was prior to the symptoms appearing.

I'm going to try to get my doctor to communicate with this center in Australia and get their meds over here in the US to see if they will work. From what I understand from their page, they use enema like meds to eradicate the blastocysts.

I also found this page which has a plethora of comments from people all suffering with Blastocysts and many haven't been able to clear them from their systems:

http://www.badbugs.org/Blastocystis_hominis/MedicalMismanagement.htm

I sincerely hope people start taking this more seriously and no just shrugging it off. I am in pain and really suffering. I hope your research will assist in treating this protozoa nightmare.

Regards,
LouiseAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12231946604884220702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-27620053982040926312013-04-27T18:13:18.837+02:002013-04-27T18:13:18.837+02:00Thank you, Louise, for taking your time here on th...Thank you, Louise, for taking your time here on the blog, and for your description of your situation. I would like to reiterate that Blastocystis is a very common parasite, also in the Western world, an asymptomatic carriage is common, at least when it comes to the common subtypes. In case you never had stool tests done (for ova and parasites or some similar test) before you went to Mexico, it's impossible to know whether you were carrying Blastocystis with you to Mexico or you only caught it out there. Your account sounds to me almost like the description of a minor outbreak, which of course would be interesting to investigate in further detail. I wonder whether your family members are carrying Blastocystis too?! Feel free to post your experience on your treatment here. There is also the Blastocystis community on Facebook where you can share your story.

Having said that I was starting to think of something else when I read your story, namely the possibility of you having been exposed to free living amoeba of some sort... However, I'm not sure about the salinity in the cenotes there in Mexico... maybe such amoebae cannot live there at all...Rune Stensvoldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09505548093935198201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8639415468540338525.post-31419759591264052812013-04-24T20:50:49.002+02:002013-04-24T20:50:49.002+02:00Hi, I just got diagnosed with having Blastocystis....Hi, I just got diagnosed with having Blastocystis. I am writing to you because I thought maybe you would be interested in my symptoms.
For Christmas and New Year's I was in Cancun, Mexico with my family. We had swam in the ocean and also in a cenote there. I have a feeling inside of me we were all infected in the Cenote. All of us have been experiencing symptoms since returning from Mexico but we all thought it to be from different causes. My situation is worse than everyone else in my family. After going to the emergency room at my local hospitals on two occasions since returning from Mexico and having X-rays, ultrasounds, blood work, CT Scan, CT with contract, angiogram, EKG, and urine tests, the doctors told me I had anxiety. The reason I went to the hospital is because I have extreme shortness of breath. I have never had this before. I never had asthma or any other symptoms. I literally woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Shortly after I began vomiting undigested food and acid so they said I had GERD and anxiety... I never had acidity before. I took all of the meds they gave me and nothing was helping. I had this weird feeling inside of me that was like an empty cold feeling and I just knew something wasn't right. I convinced my doctor to do stool tests in which they found the blastocysts. I had begun a metronidazole regimen right after I turned in my stool samples. I was taking it 3x a day for 7 days with no improvement at all. I did notice a slight improvement with Primal Defense probiotics. I take 3 a day but still feel shortness of breath and my gut is constantly making awful noises. My doctor has now prescribed me Nitazoxinide to take for 3 days with a refill for an additional 3 if it doesn't work. I will let you know how it goes, if you would like.
